The Food Cooperation of India and state agencies are all set to procure a record quantity of 742 lakh tonnes of paddy during the ongoing Kharif season as against 627 lakh tonnes last year. The number of purchase centres for Kharif 2020-21 have also been increased from 30,709 to 39,122 said, Piyush Goyal, Minister of Consumer Affairs.
Speaking about proactive steps to ensure affordable onions, he said that DGFT was facilitating import by private players. The Essential Commodities Act had been invoked for onion stock limit of 25 tonnes for wholesaler and 2 tonnes for retailer, with effect from October 23. The export of onion seeds was prohibited from 2020 and the disposal of onion from buffer stock was being done in order to provide relief to people in view of the soaring onion prices.
The government has been taking steps to moderate potato prices. The import duty on potato has been reduced to 10% till January 31. Earlier, it was 30%.
Similarly, efforts are also on to moderate the prices of pulses. There has been retail intervention in three pulses – Moong, Urad and Tur Dal – by supplying pulses from buffer stocks to States and UTs.
