Sowing area during Kharif season this year is 1,116.88 lakh hectares compared to 1066.06 lakh hectares, the total sowing areas in the last year. The final sowing figures for Kharif season is expected to be closed on October 1.
Sowing of rice is over 407.14 lakh ha, compared to 385.71 lakh ha during the corresponding period of last year, thus registering an increase of 5.56 per cent. The area under pulses is 139.36 lakh ha, against 133.94 lakh ha last year, an increase in coverage by 4.05 per cent. Coverage of coarse cereals is over 183.01 lakh ha area, against 180.35 lakh ha last year, up by 1.47%.
Similarly, the sowing area of oilseeds sowing area is 197.18 lakh ha, against 179.63 lakh ha last year, an increase of 9.77 per cent. Sugarcane sowing area is 52.84 lakh ha, against 51.89 lakh ha last year, an increase of 1.83 per cent.
Cotton sowing area is 130.37 lakh ha, against 127.67 lakh ha last year, up by 2.11 per cent. Jute and mesta sowing area is 6.98 lakh ha, against 6.86 lakh ha, an increase of 1.78 per cent.
